Sadabahar is an attractive, evergreen shrub. Madagascar periwinkle plant is called sadabahar plant in Hindi and nithyakalyani in Tamil. There are two varieties that are common in India. One variety produces white flowers and the other produces beautiful dark pink flowers.The plant is native to southeastern and eastern Madagascar. It gained world recognition after the European colonists exported it as an ornamental plant. Sadabahar can grow in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The glossy leaves of the plant are oval to oblong in shape and arranged in opposite pairs.The flowers usually have five petal.
The plant helps in the treatment of many ailments, though the leaves of the plant is used the most for medicinal uses. Sadabahar or the Vinca rosea plant has been used both in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese medicine. The leaves, flowers and roots are used in Ayurvedic medicine. Chinese medicine uses the extracts of the plant for diseases such as diabetes, malaria, leukemia and Hodgkin’s disease.
In traditional medicine, the leaf juice has been used to treat wasp stings, a gargle is used for sore throats, flower extracts are used for infants’ eyewash. Periwinkle tea is used to treat diabetes and cough. Sadabahar leaves are used to control diabetes.It controls nosebleeds, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and sore throats and is useful in treating gastritis, cystitis, enteritis, diarrhea, diabetes, etc when taken internally.Sadabahar is also used in the treatment of menstrual problems, constipation and asthma and this herb helps in healing the wounds of the skin.
