It will be easier to tell the difference between human and AI-written content. To comply with the European Union (EU) AI Act, the famous AI company ‘Anthropic’ is adding a special watermark to the text of its popular chatbot ‘Cloud’. However, this watermark is not a visible label or code. Till now, you must have seen watermarks on photos and videos made by AI. But now the cloud chatbot maker company Anthropic is going to apply it to its text content as well. Because it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference between AI and human-written text. This watermark will not be clearly visible to the general public like any mark or code in the text. The company has said that this step is being taken globally to comply with the EU’s AI Act. According to this law, content made by AI must be marked in a way that can be read by machines.
How does this watermark work?
Word selection process: Cloud AI selects words one by one while answering it. When it has many correct word options in front of it, it uses a special system to select the words.
Hidden pattern: This method of word selection becomes its identity or watermark. These selections leave a pattern that is not visible to the average reader, but can be easily recognized by someone with the right ‘key’.
Readers will not know the difference:
The company has clarified that this watermark will not have any negative impact on the output quality or content of Cloud. Readers will not know the difference between text with and without watermark. No additional characters or tokens are added to these answers, so its use is not expensive or slow.
Not easy to remove by editing:
This watermark is designed in such a way that even if the AI copy-pastes the text, it remains there and does not get removed easily even after minor editing. However, it is not completely impossible to remove it. If the entire text is rewritten and every word is changed, then this watermark can be removed. In addition, the company has clarified that the watermark will only show that the cloud has some level of involvement with that content. This does not mean that the cloud will be completely proven to have written the entire article, essay or document.
