Artemis II Splashdown: NASA Astronauts Return Safely After 10-Day Historic Moon Mission

Artemis-2 returns to the surface. The Artemis-2 lunar module has successfully returned to the surface of the Earth. It landed on the San Diego coast of the Pacific Ocean at 5:37 am. NASA’s famous lunar mission Artemis-2. Artemis-2 has returned after completing its lunar orbit with four astronauts. This is the first manned lunar mission since 1972. The mission, launched on April 1, lasted 10 days.

During the landing, communication was lost for 6 minutes. This means that the astronauts could not communicate with the mission control. At 5:37 a.m., the Orion capsule made a soft landing in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, California, USA. The recovery team rescued the astronauts and brought them back to the ship. Commander Reid Wiseman, Canadian pilots Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen reentered the atmosphere at Mach 33. It was a feat not seen since NASA’s Apollo moon missions in the 1960s and 1970s. Their Orion capsule, named Integrity, operated on automatic pilot.

Artemis II Record Flight – Artemis II was expected to descend at 36,170 feet (11,025 meters) per second, or 24,661 miles per hour (39,668 kilometers per hour), slightly below the record, and then slow to 19 miles (30 kilometers) per hour. The astronauts, who launched from Florida on April 1, successfully achieved a series of milestones in NASA’s long-awaited lunar mission, the first major step toward establishing a permanent lunar base.

Longest Distance Record – Artemis II did not land on the Moon or orbit the Moon. It broke the distance record set by Apollo 13 and set the record for the longest distance traveled by humans from Earth. The crew traveled 252,756 miles (406,711 kilometers). In one of the most emotional scenes of the mission, the tearful astronauts asked permission to name their lunar module and two creatures after Weizmann’s late wife, Carol.
