Currently, 10 teams are playing a total of 74 matches in the IPL season. Due to the low number of matches, each team cannot meet each other twice. But the BCCI is planning to increase the format of the league in the future. This was said by IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal.
He said, “If we get the opportunity after the 2027 edition, then the format of the IPL will increase. The number of matches in the season will be increased from 74 to 94. After the entry of two new teams (Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants), each team does not get the opportunity to meet each other twice in the league stage. But as the schedule of bilateral series till 2027 has been finalized, we have nothing in our hands now. We will discuss with the ICC only after this cycle is over. But every country emphasizes organizing domestic leagues in their own country. Because it helps in strengthening the financial position of the board. So, IPL not only helps in increasing the value of Indian players but also increases the value of world cricket. If we get the opportunity, we will increase the size of IPL. The plan to increase the number of IPL teams from 10 to 12 is on hold for now. ’
The IPL started in 2008 with 8 teams. Later, 2 new teams were added. But after some time, they also dropped out. In 2022, two more teams were added to expand to 10 teams. Despite this, the total number of matches remains 74. The Board of Control for Cricket in India last sold the media rights. In the first two years, 74 matches were planned. It was increased to 94. This plan has not been implemented yet. It will almost certainly remain the same in the 2027 season.
