New Delhi, 26.3: Amid reports of rising tensions in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Jordan have jointly issued an open letter strongly condemning the attacks carried out by Iran and its proxies. They warned that they will no longer tolerate such attacks by Iran or its proxies. In their joint statement, these countries clearly declared that the attacks carried out by Iran, whether directly or through its supported proxies and armed groups, are against the UN Charter. The attacks have been described as a violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of regional states.
In their letter, the Gulf states have made a key demand, citing their long-standing and strong ties with Iraq. They have stressed that attacks launched by militias and armed groups operating from Iraqi soil must cease immediately. This is a direct message to those groups that enjoy Iranian support. Invoking their historical ties with Iraq, these states have urged the Iraqi government to take the necessary steps to immediately stop such attacks from its territory. The aim is to preserve regional relations and prevent further escalation.
The most important aspect of the letter is its reference to the “right of self-defense.” The six states have made it clear that if the attacks do not cease, they will not hesitate to take retaliatory measures, either individually or “collectively,” to ensure their security in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter. They emphasized their inherent right to take all necessary measures to safeguard their sovereignty, security, and stability. These nations sent a clear message that regional security and stability are paramount to them and that any form of instability or terrorist activity will not be tolerated.
