As the widespread use of AI grows in today’s world, the electricity and water consumption of the data centers powering it is also rising at an alarming rate. To address this issue, tech giant Microsoft has taken an innovative step. The company has established an ultra-modern data center hub in India that can handle massive AI workloads while remaining cool without the use of water.
Microsoft’s Largest Cloud Region in Hyderabad:
Puneet Chandok, Head of Microsoft India and South Asia, has inaugurated the company’s fourth—and largest to date—cloud region in Hyderabad. This new data center has been operational since August 6 as part of the company’s ₹1.7 lakh crore investment plan for India. Following Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai, this massive hub has now been established in Hyderabad and is designed to handle heavy AI workloads from day one.
Environmental Protection and Water Conservation:
Instead of traditional water-based systems, this data center utilizes ‘air-cooled chiller’ technology, which regulates server temperatures using only air. Measures have been taken to conserve water and replenish groundwater; the project aims to create a groundwater recharge capacity of approximately 50 lakh liters. The company has already signed agreements for 1 gigawatt of renewable energy in India, with the supply of 630 megawatts of power already underway.
Major Goal for 2030:
Microsoft has stated that the demand for data centers will rise rapidly alongside the increasing use of AI in the near future. With this in mind, the company aims to transform its entire infrastructure into ‘carbon negative,’ ‘water positive,’ and ‘zero waste’ by 2030. This innovative technology will not only help conserve electricity and water but will also prove to be a significant milestone in maintaining environmental balance.
