Mercer Survey Report: AI to Cut Jobs for 22-27 Year Olds Within Next Two Years

For decades, young workers have relied on entry-level jobs to learn the basics of the job, gain experience, and qualify for larger roles. Now, a new global survey shows that this path is changing faster than expected. According to Mercer’s latest Global Talent Trends report, more than 99 percent of enterprise executives believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to some level of workforce reduction in the next two years. This includes young workers, those aged 22-27.

The survey collected data from nearly 12,000 executives, HR leaders, and employees worldwide. While concerns about AI-driven job losses have been around for years, the latest data shows that companies are now actively considering strategies, especially for younger roles. The talent crisis is a top concern for executives, with 99 percent expecting AI to take over some jobs in the next two years.

In this context, 60 percent of HR leaders estimate that 11-20 percent of employees will need to be retrained or reassigned due to AI. It is estimated that 40 percent of employees are considering leaving their organizations in the next year, which is expected to put pressure on employers.
