Global support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council is steadily growing. During the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro strongly advocated for granting India permanent membership. Emphasizing the need for Security Council reform, he supported allocating permanent seats to Africa, Brazil, and India. Prime Minister Montenegro reiterated the call for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC, stating that in today’s changing world, the Security Council must be made more representative and robust. Portugal has previously supported India’s bid for permanent membership, having done so as early as 2022. India’s Position in the Security Council:
The Prime Minister of Portugal has stated that the world has undergone significant changes; therefore, the composition of the Security Council also needs to change. Granting permanent membership to Brazil and India, alongside African nations, would enable the Security Council to function more effectively and expeditiously. It is worth noting that the United Nations Security Council comprises a total of 15 member nations. Among them, five are permanent members—the USA, Russia, China, France, and the UK—who possess veto power. Additionally, 10 non-permanent members are elected for a two-year term. India has long been advocating for comprehensive reforms and permanent membership in the UNSC. India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil have been jointly raising a strong voice on this issue. Renewed support for India’s permanent membership from a European nation like Portugal is being viewed as a major success for Indian diplomacy.
