Politics in India usually follows a pattern. When things do not go as planned people often stop talking about what the voters think and start talking about how the process failed. This happened after the West Bengal Assembly elections. The Opposition is now saying that the Special Intensive Revision exercise was not fair and that it affected the election results.. If we look at the facts we can see that these claims are more about the Opposition trying to make a point than about actual proof.
A Standard Used All Over The Country Not In One State
The first thing we need to know is that the Special Intensive Revision was not just something that happened in West Bengal. It was an exercise done by the Election Commission all over the country to make sure the voting lists are correct. In a country like India where people move around a lot it is necessary to remove the names of people who have died or moved to a place so that the vote is fair. In fact states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat which are ruled by the BJP had even higher percentages of names deleted from the voting lists compared to West Bengal. If this process was unfair it did not seem to favor any party.
How The Vote Works
One thing that people are arguing about is that the difference in the percentage of votes between the winning and losing parties is not that big but the difference in the number of seats they won is huge. This argument does not take into account how the voting system in India works. In the past we have seen that even a small change of 2 or 3 percent in the votes can lead to a win or a big loss for a party. In West Bengal the BJP did well not in a few areas but all over the state including North Bengal, Jungle Mahal and the Presidency region. This shows that there was a change in how people were thinking about the parties and it was because they were not happy with the current government.
The Courts Were Watching
Maybe the strongest argument against the idea that the election was stolen is that the whole process was watched closely by the courts. Both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court were keeping an eye on things. If there had been any unfairness in the voting process the courts would have had the chance to stop it.. They let the election go ahead which means they thought the process was fair.
Democracy works best when we respect the decision of the people. The Opposition has the right to question the results. They need to have facts to back up their claims. The result of the West election in 2026 was what the people wanted. Trying to say that the result is not valid, by attacking an exercise to clean up the voting lists only serves to make people lose trust in our democratic institutions. It is time to stop playing the blame game and respect the choice of the voters. The people of West Bengal made their decision. We should accept the West Bengal election results. The Opposition should respect the West election results and the people who voted in the West Bengal election.
