The Tamil Nadu state government has opened a window of opportunity for its lakhs of employees and pensioners. Led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijaya, the government on Thursday took a landmark decision to increase Dearness Allowance (DA) by 2 per cent. After this decision, the DA rate in the state has now increased from 58 per cent to 60 per cent. One of the major attractions of this move is that the increase will be effective in the future, specifically from January 1, 2026.
This move by the government will not only benefit the serving employees but will also put more money in the pockets of retired pensioners. The scope of this government decision is wide-ranging. According to official information, the increase will directly benefit about 1.6 million government employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners across the state. Chief Minister Joseph Vijaya stressed that employees and teachers play a vital role in delivering government schemes to the common man. The Government firmly believes that it is a fundamental duty of the administration to ensure the welfare of its employees, so that they can contribute to the development of the state with unwavering dedication.
The decision of the Tamil Nadu government comes after the recent announcement by the Central Government. It is noteworthy that the Central Government had also increased the dearness allowance for its employees from 58 percent to 60 percent with effect from January 1, 2026. Following this central revision, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister directed the officials to ensure that the increased allowance is also paid to state employees and teachers at the same rate. This decision effectively addresses the disparity in allowances between the state and the Centre, as state employees will get the same benefits as their Central Government counterparts.
