The Golden Trophy: How Much IPL Prize Money Has Changed Since the 2008 Inaugural Season

The Indian Premier League is one of the most prestigious leagues in the world. It has now become the richest league. In the last few years, the TV and sponsorship rights of the mega tournament have increased. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also increased the prize money of the tournament significantly. In the last 19 years, the board has increased the prize money at various levels. The IPL started in 2008. At that time, Rajasthan Royals received a prize money of 4.8 crores. Later, as the tournament gradually expanded, the board increased the prize money many times. Until 2010-13, the winning team was given a prize money of 13 crores.

Later, the prize money was revised again in 2014. Due to which the winning team received 15 crores in the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Then in 2016, it increased further to 20 crores for the champion’s purse, which remained till 2019. The financial uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic forced the BCCI to reduce the prize money to Rs 10 crore for the 2020 season, but as the situation improved, the board restored the prize money to Rs 20 crore from 2021. Since then, the IPL winning team has continued to receive Rs 20 crore as prize money. This has underlined the tournament’s establishment as one of the richest and most lucrative franchise-based T20 cricket leagues in the world.

The BCCI has allocated a total of Rs 46.5 crore for IPL 2026. The winning team will get Rs 20 crore, while the runner-up team will get Rs 13 crore. Not only the finalists, but the winning team in Qualifier 2 will also get Rs 7 crore, which will be rewarded to Sunrisers Hyderabad for playing the Eliminator with a prize money of Rs 6.5 crore.
