Declining Girl Child Ratio: Illegal Sex Determination Rackets Threatening Society

Starting from a family, a woman is the backbone of a country, a nation and a civilization. The progress of a woman indicates the progress of a country. Today’s woman is no longer limited to the four corners. Be it as a representative of the people or at the administrative level. Everywhere, women are working successfully on an equal footing with men. Therefore, while it is said that there is no difference between women and men, the birth of girl children is decreasing day by day. Although the government has issued restrictions on sex determination, it seems that it is actually being followed. Many complaints are being made that sex determination is being done by trading money from the masses. In the Zhuang community, a tribal community in Keonjhar district, more girls are born than boys. Excluding the Zhuang community, overall, fewer girls are born here at birth. That is, while a total of 1000 boys are born, the number of girls is 946. In a tribal-dominated district like Keonjhar, such a situation has raised alarm bells for the society.

It has now become difficult to find a suitable girl for marriage. It is said that if this trend continues, it will prove to be a loss for the society. According to official data, from April 2024 to March 2025, a total of 13,518 boys were born in Keonjhar district, while the number of girls born was 12,786. Accordingly, the ratio of boys to girls is 946 for every thousand boys. In such a situation, a total of 37 ultrasound centers have been registered in Keonjhar district, of which 24 are currently functional. Out of which 5 are used by the government, while 19 are privately operated.

It is often said that since sex determination is carried out illegally in various private ultrasound centers, there is no difference between the birth of a boy and a girl. These private ultrasound centers often charge a lot of money to determine the sex of the baby, and therefore abortions are often carried out. Although this is a data from Keonjhar, according to the last year, the highest number of girls were born in Deogarh district in the state, while the ratio was the lowest in Nayagarh. That is, in the last financial year 2024-25, 931 boys were born in Deogarh district, while the number of girls was 926. That is, the ratio of boys to girls in Deogarh district is 995 girls per thousand boys. Similarly, in Nayagarh district, 4656 boys were born in this financial year 2024-25, while 3869 girls were born. That is, only 831 girls were born in this district for every thousand boys. Which is shown as the lowest in the state according to official data.
