Delhi Govt Schools Prepare For Medical Rooms, Rs 48.87 Crore Budget Approved

The Delhi government has stated that a significant proposal has been prepared to establish medical facilities in all government schools across the capital. Delhi’s Education Minister, Atishi, announced that the Delhi government will set up medical facilities in all government schools under the Directorate of Education. The objective of this initiative is to provide students with immediate first aid and essential care during school hours. The government plans to spend approximately ₹48.87 crore annually for this purpose.

Students spend a substantial part of their day at school. During school hours, minor injuries, sudden illness, fatigue, dizziness, and general discomfort are common occurrences. Currently, many government schools lack the designated space or infrastructure required to provide immediate care to students in such situations. This often leads to delays in treatment, which becomes a cause for concern for both the students and their parents. The medical rooms, intended to be set up in schools to provide first-aid facilities, will be supervised by trained health personnel; they will handle tasks such as dressing wounds, administering ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution), and allowing students time to rest when necessary. Medical examinations or the provision of prescription medications will not be conducted or supplied within the schools. A trained health worker—such as an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) or a Multipurpose Health Worker—will be deployed in every school. These health workers will assist female students with immediate health needs and issues related to adolescent health.

The medical room will provide a safe, private, and comfortable space for female students during their menstrual periods. An annual expenditure of approximately Rs 48.87 crore has been estimated to cover all 1,086 government schools. The scheme will be implemented in phases. In the first phase, medical facilities will be established in schools that already have a separate room available. Subsequently, this facility will be extended to other schools through the use of alternative rooms and porta-cabins.
