In the first flood water discharge process from the world’s longest Hirakud dam, gate number 7 of the left spillway is opened first. This sequence is seen every year. So, for what reason this particular gate is opened, interesting and interesting things are also heard at various times. However, the question remains even today among those who have a scientific perspective about what is the technical aspect of it.
In this regard, Chief Engineer Eng. Pratap Chandra Chowdhury said, there is no such technical reason behind it. According to belief, there is a history of opening this gate earlier, considering the number 7 as auspicious. Continuing the previous trend, that gate is still being opened. There are a maximum of 40 gates on the Hirakud side and left spillway. There are 24 gates on the south and Burla sides. Therefore, the Hirakud side has a greater role in flood water management. On the other hand, since it is an earthen dam, the first or initial gate of the spillway needs to be opened later and only when there is a greater need.
Hirakud is one of the world’s major multi-purpose river dam projects. Its water storage capacity and modern features amaze everyone. However, it still has the imprint of tradition and faith along with technology. Even today, the tradition of performing pujapaths and homa yagnas before the gates were opened continues. There has been no change in this tradition with the changing times. Which is considered to be a wonderful combination of modern technology and traditional faith.
