If you own a vehicle and reside in the national capital, Delhi, this news is important for you. The Delhi government is preparing to take significant action in response to rising pollution levels in the state. Starting October 1, the government is launching a special and stringent enforcement drive to curb air pollution. Air quality in the Delhi-NCR region typically deteriorates with the onset of winter and the rainy season; in view of this, the administration has already swung into action.
Under this new campaign, strict surveillance will be maintained on vehicles. A hefty fine of ₹10,000 will be imposed under the Motor Vehicles Act on any vehicle found without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate during inspection—specifically, if the certificate has expired or is no longer valid.
It is worth noting that this major campaign has been announced by the Delhi Chief Minister to reduce smoke and toxic pollutants in the air during the winter season. Under Rule 115(7) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, it is mandatory for every motor vehicle to possess a valid PUC certificate one year after its initial registration.
This rule applies to all commercial and private vehicles running on petrol, diesel, and CNG. However, electric vehicles are exempt from this inspection process due to their zero tailpipe emissions. Failure to produce a valid certificate when asked during an inspection could result in a fine, imprisonment, or the cancellation of the license.
