World’s First Commercial Brain Chip ‘Neo’ Approved for Global Healthcare

China has overtaken Elon Musk’s company Neuralink in commercializing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. Dragon has approved the world’s first commercial brain chip, Neo, after successful clinical trials. According to a New York Times report, the coin-shaped chip has emerged as the world’s first surgically implanted device. This cutting-edge device was jointly developed by researchers at Tsinghua University in Beijing and Shanghai-based Neuracol Technology.

After receiving regulatory approval, it is expected to be widely used in China’s state-owned healthcare system. The technology will be used specifically for spinal cord injury and paralysis patients. It will help regain control of parts of the nervous system. Researchers and technology companies are seeing this technology as the beginning of a major breakthrough in human-machine communication. Elon Musk’s NeuralLink is also awaiting approval.
