The Silence of a Legend: Why This Famous Singer Quit the Film Industry After Mehmood’s Demise

You must have heard ‘Ek Pal Ka Jeena …’ from ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ and ‘Safarnama’ from ‘Tamasha’. Before this, it is important for you to know that this singer had won the Best Pop Male Vocalist Award at the 1996 Screen Awards, the Channel V Viewers’ Choice Award in 1997 and the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2001.

This singer’s name is Lucky Ali. He is the son of the late actor Mehmood of the Hindi film industry. When Mehmood passed away, Lucky was in Pennsylvania, America. He had gone to America for his treatment. After the death of his father, Lucky had stayed away from both Mumbai and the film industry. In an interview with Navbharat Times, he said, “The decision to stay away from the Hindi film industry was not due to toxicity, but because I was very depressed. After my father’s death, I felt that I had nothing left.”

Lucky Ali said, “I did films and also sang songs, but there came a time when I did not understand what to do next. I wanted to sing in my own way. I sang my song, ‘O Sanam’, when I was given the freedom to sing in my own way. In 2015, I distanced myself from the industry. Yes, I was mistreated, but I was not away from the toxicity of the industry, I was bored.”

Lucky Ali had said about his father, “After Baba left, it felt like there was nothing left. There were no friends, no one close to me.” Yes, I did ‘Trikal’ and ‘Bharat Ek Jhez’ with Shyam Benegal. I learned a lot from artists like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Om Puri. After a while, I returned to music with my own label and my own style. There was no competition for me. I understood that if you do true and good work, people will listen to you and if you do something unnecessary, they will reject you.

Lucky Ali’s mother’s name was Madhu Ali (female). Madhu was the younger sister of famous Hindi film actress Meena Kumari. Lucky Ali has been married three times. First, he married Meghan Jane McCleary from New Zealand and he is the father of two children – Taabuz and Tasmia. Later, he divorced Meghan and married a Parsi woman, Inaya. Inaaya and Lucky Ali have two children – Sara and Rayan. In 2010, Lucky Ali married British model and ex-beauty queen Kate Elizabeth Helm. Kate and Lucky have a son, Danny Maqsood Ali. Later, they divorced in 2017.

Lucky Ali worked as a child artist in his father’s film ‘Chhete Nawab’ (1962). Later, he showed his beautiful acting skills in films like ‘Kante’ (2002), Sur (2002) and Tamasa (2015). It is said that apart from singing, Lucky Ali is also interested in horse riding and organic farming.
