Is Ethanol Making Your Sugar Costlier? Govt Clears the Air with Major Clarification

Sugar prices have been rising for the past few weeks. Some reports had attributed the ethanol campaign to this. Now the government has reacted to it. According to the government, ethanol is not responsible for the increase in sugar prices. Sugar prices are increasing due to lower than expected domestic production, increased demand, crop losses, disruption of global supply chains and the violence of traders.

According to reports, the price of sugar was Rs 48.18 per kg on July 20. It reached Rs 55.70 on August 20. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to increase availability in the domestic market and control prices. The government has said that it is not right to assume that ethanol is responsible for the increase in sugar prices.
